Remarks EFSA re-evaluated the health risk from bisphenol A in foodstuffs in 2023. A significantly lower TDI of bisphenol A of 0.2 ng/kg bw per day was established. Bisphenol analogues with similar structures are used as replacement of bisphenol A, but are suspected to have similar effects on human health. Therefore, a ban on the use of bisphenols in food contact material by the EU is expected for 2025. Bisphenols migrate into food from polycarbonate food contact materials like tins. Due to the significant lowering of the TDI of BPA, canned foods on the market might now exceed the toxicological limit value and might be considered as not safe for the consumers anymore. P2504-RT is designed for the quantification of bisphenols and derivatives thereof in canned food. Canned pea soup is chosen as matrix. The pea soup is either already contaminated with bisphenols and analogues thereof or spiked with a selection of the parameters mentioned below. The concentration levels are in the typical range for bisphenols found in canned products (low µg/kg range). The unspiked material is provided as blank material upon request. The analytical data are assessed with respect to - the correct identification of the spiked bisphenols, - the comparability (z-score), and - the trueness (70 to 120% of the spiked level, as far as applicable).
